All about certified translations

We can define a certified translation as a translation of documents written in a foreign language that is legally valid before official bodies. Certified translations can only be performed by an official translator, who signs and seals the translation as proof that it is faithful to the original.

Certified translations are usually required in administrative and judicial proceedings where foreign documents must be submitted to the Public Administration. Therefore, public bodies often require a document to be translated by an official translator to confirm its legal validity.

No, only translators authorized by the competent authority—in the case of Spain, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation (MAEC)—are qualified to perform certified translations. You can find out the regulations governing obtaining this certification here .

The main difference lies in the reason for requiring the translation. If we need our document to be legally valid before any public body, we will need a certified translation prepared by a certified translator-interpreter authorized to do so. In the case of Spain, by a certified translator authorized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation. These translations must also be issued on paper, as they require the certification, signature, and seal of the certified translator.

On the other hand, if we don’t need our document to be legally valid, a simple translation would be necessary. This can be issued in either electronic or paper format, as it doesn’t require certification from a certified translator-interpreter.

The main difference between translation and interpretation is the method of transmitting the message to be communicated. While translation is written and requires the reproduction of a message from a written text in language A into language B, interpretation is oral and involves transmitting a message orally into another language. Although both activities have the same objective, the techniques, skills, and time required for each are very different.

The price of a certified translation is not a fixed price; rather, it is determined by the number of words translated and the language combination, i.e., the language of the original document and the language to be translated. Sometimes, it also depends on the type of document to be translated.

The Hague Apostille is a seal placed on a public document to certify its authenticity, thus giving it legal effect in another country. If a document bears this seal, it can be recognized and authenticated in any other country that has signed the Hague Convention.

Documents that typically carry an apostille are public documents, such as official certifications (contracts, deeds, wills, etc.), documents issued by an authority or official, such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, criminal record certificates, etc., as well as administrative documents (academic qualifications, adoption documents, etc.).

A translation of the Hague Apostille is required when translations must be submitted to offices, consulates, or embassies. Therefore, when a certified translation of a document containing this Apostille is performed, it must also be translated so that it is legally valid in the destination country.
